ABOUT ARNELL MEMORIAL HUMANE SOCIETY
Arnell Memorial Humane Society is a private, open admission, non-profit animal shelter. As the designated stray holding facility for Polk County, we accept all strays. We also take in surrendered pets by appointment.
Our shelter offers dogs and cats for adoption. We are small enough that we know all of our animals very well and can offer insights and advice to ensure that your pet adoption from us will be a success. We want our animals to become loving family members and a rewarding addition in their new homes.
Arnell is dedicated to the protection of animals by providing information, education, and shelter; encouraging adoptions; promoting responsible pet guardianship; and expanding the human/animal bond.
Arnell is funded through donations, fundraising activities, adoption fees, and compensation as the holding facility for Polk County.

HAVE YOU EVER MET A MAN WITH A CHICKEN ON HIS SHOULDER?
Roy Arnell was a farmer from Balsam Lake, Wisconsin, known around Amery for walking through town with a chicken on his shoulder. A quiet advocate for animals, Roy and his wife Hazel left their estate to support their care and protection.
In 1995, the Arnell Memorial Humane Society (AMHS) was founded by a group of concerned citizens and animal lovers. The organization was named in honor of Roy Arnell, whose estate gift made it possible to construct a permanent animal shelter. The building was completed in 2000 in Amery, Wisconsin, marking the beginning of a new chapter for animal welfare in Polk County.
Roy and Hazel Arnell, shared a deep commitment to animal care. Their legacy continues through the work of AMHS, which serves animals in the Polk County area to this day.
